Cobalt Technologies Inc., which has developed a process to make chemicals out of waste wood materials, raised a new $20 million Series D venture round, but its chief executive tells VentureWire that it may have been easier to tap the public markets. That’s because several companies that use bio-based materials instead of petroleum to make chemicals or fuels have either gone public recently, like Gevo, or are in registration, like Solazyme and Kior.
